Alpha Juno-1

KeyboardHybridPolyphonic

Back in 1986, this sleek powerhouse kicked off Roland's Alpha Juno series, packing legendary Juno warmth into a super-compact frame that redefined portable poly synths.

At its heart sits a 6-voice analog subtractive engine with DCOs offering sawtooth, pulse, square, noise, and up to six sub-oscillator options for thick, lush tones, all shaped by a resonant 24dB/octave low-pass filter, manual high-pass filter, multi-stage ADSR envelope with key follow, and a triangle LFO. Programming happens via the innovative Alpha dial paired with membrane buttons and a 16-character backlit LCD, though four dedicated Tone Modify buttons make quick tweaks to mod rate/depth, brilliance, and envelope times a breeze. The 49-key (4-octave) velocity-sensitive keyboard feels solid, with a signature Roland pitch/mod joystick, portamento, chord memory, transpose, and variable stereo chorus for instant fatness. Performance extras include octave shift buttons, three pedal jacks (hold, switch, expression), and full MIDI In/Out/Thru, all in a lightweight 5.4kg chassis measuring just 802x240x79mm.

Players love its punchy, versatile pads and basses that cut through mixes even today, though the dial-based editing draws some gripes for being fiddly compared to sliders—pair it with a PG-300 programmer for smoother workflow. It's a vintage gem that still inspires in studios worldwide.
