Roland's JUNO line defined the sound of 1980s pop and new wave, and the JUNO-X brings that legacy into the modern era by essentially giving you three synthesizers in one box. You get faithful recreations of the JUNO-60 and JUNO-106 alongside a brand-new JUNO-X engine that takes the classic formula and pushes it forward with enhanced Super Saw oscillators, velocity sensitivity, and a third chorus mode that adds even more character to the already-legendary Juno sound.
The JUNO-X runs on Roland's ZEN-Core synthesis system and features 61 slightly weighted, velocity-sensitive keys with channel aftertouch for expressive playing. You get 256 voices of polyphony, over 4,000 preset sounds, and 90 drum kits to work with. The synth is organized around five parts—four for melodic instruments and one dedicated rhythm section—which you can layer and control independently. Each part has its own multi-effects processor with 93 effect types available, plus individual EQ, overdrive, and delay. On top of that, there's a master effects section with compressor, EQ, reverb, and five different chorus modes. The I-Arpeggio system intelligently responds to how you play, adapting across all five parts with playing detection built in.
Control-wise, you've got a pitch and modulation lever, two assignable sliders, and three assignable switches for real-time tweaking. The 128 x 64 pixel display keeps things readable, and built-in stereo speakers with 4-watt drivers give you immediate feedback without needing external gear. You can also connect via USB audio and MIDI, Bluetooth 4.2 for wireless MIDI, and XLR or 1/4-inch outputs for professional setups. The Scenes feature lets you save complete setups—sound parameters, arpeggio settings, effects chains, and even full sequences—and recall them instantly, which is invaluable for live work.
The JUNO-X has earned respect from players who appreciate both its vintage authenticity and modern workflow. The three-in-one engine approach means you're not locked into one sonic character, and the addition of XV-5080 sounds, RD piano models, and vocoder functionality gives it surprising versatility beyond classic Juno territory.
