JV-1000

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

When Roland released the JV-1000 in 1993, they essentially took their acclaimed JV-80 sound module and married it to a 76-key keyboard with an integrated sequencer, creating a self-contained workstation that could handle everything from live performance to full song production without needing external gear.

The JV-1000 features a 76-key semi-weighted keyboard with velocity and aftertouch sensitivity, paired with Roland's FXM synthesis engine capable of 28 voices of polyphony that can expand to 56 with an optional expansion board. The front panel includes eight control sliders for real-time editing of both the internal sound source and optional V-EXP expansion board, plus dedicated pitch and modulation wheels. The synth offers dual LFOs, a resonant lowpass filter with dedicated pitch, filter, and amp envelopes, and effects processing including eight reverb types and three chorus algorithms. The built-in sequencer provides eight tracks plus rhythm and tempo tracks, capable of storing up to 40,000 notes across multiple songs in SMF-compatible format. You get 384 patches and 96 performances in preset memory, with additional internal storage for custom sounds, and the unit supports PCM and program cards for further expansion.

The JV-1000 earned respect in the studio and on stage for its combination of deep sound design capabilities and practical sequencing power. Musicians appreciated its flexibility as both a standalone composition tool and a MIDI controller, though the learning curve on its complex front panel and menu system was occasionally cited as a drawback. The ability to layer internal sounds with external MIDI instruments via separate outputs made it particularly valuable for producers working with hybrid setups. Its 1232mm width and semi-weighted action struck a balance between portability and playability that appealed to touring musicians who needed serious sound-shaping tools without a full-size weighted keyboard.
