Launched in 1994, this rackmount legend packed 8MB of Roland's finest PCM waveforms into a compact 2U chassis, instantly becoming a studio staple for its lush, versatile sounds that spanned orchestral swells to gritty analog-style leads.

At its core, it's a digital rompler with 64-voice polyphony and 16-part multitimbrality, drawing from 448 onboard samples where each patch layers 1-4 waveforms with FM, ring mod, and a resonant filter offering low/high/band-pass or peaking modes. Dedicated 4-stage envelopes shape pitch, filter, and amp, while dual LFOs deliver waveforms like sine, square, S&H, and trapezoid for motion, all tweakable via the 40x2 backlit LCD, 35 buttons, and two front knobs. Effects include 40 insert types, chorus, and reverb, routed through three stereo outs plus headphones, with four internal SR-JV80 expansion slots and PCM/data card support pushing wave memory to 42MB. MIDI implementation is deep, with velocity, aftertouch response, and ports for in/out/thru, making it a GM-compatible workhorse at just 5kg and 16W draw.

Over the years, it's earned endless praise for its warm, mix-ready tones that hold up in modern productions—artists from Vangelis to film scorers swear by it—though some note the front-panel editing can feel dense without an external controller.
