JV-80

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1992, this synth kicked off Roland's legendary JV line, paving the way for heavyweights like the JV-1080 with its clever use of PCM waveforms and expandable card slots that let you swap in orchestral libraries or vintage synth emulations on the fly.

At its heart, it's a 28-voice polyphonic digital beast with 129 onboard waveforms, processed through TVF filters, TVAs, dual LFOs, and unique tricks like Frequency Cross-Modulation for gritty textures. You get seven multitimbral parts plus a dedicated rhythm track, all tweakable via eight hands-on Edit Palette sliders above the 61-key velocity-sensitive keyboard with channel aftertouch—perfect for real-time sound sculpting. A 2x40 backlit LCD guides you through performances (64 user patches, 16 performances), reverb (8 types), and chorus (3 types), with stereo 1/4" outs in a slim 39" x 12" x 3.4" frame weighing just 20 pounds.

Players love its warm, punchy low end and smooth keybed for 80s-inspired layers, though the deep menu diving takes some getting used to, and stock sounds shine brightest with expansions.
