Back in 1987, this rhythm composer arrived as Roland's bridge between the raw analog punch of the TR-808 and TR-909 and the digital precision that was just emerging, packing 12-bit PCM samples into a super portable package that ran on batteries or a 9V adapter.

At its heart, it's a digital drum machine with 30 drum voices across 8-voice polyphony, delivering straightforward acoustic-style kicks, snares, hats, and percussion that you can tune and mix individually. The sequencer shines with a clear matrix LCD display for programming 48 preset patterns, 48 user patterns, and 20 internal songs (up to 2000 parts total) at 96 PPQN resolution, plus FSK tape sync and solid MIDI in/out for syncing with other gear. Hands-on control comes via 16 velocity-sensitive pads, a single value dial, and 10 outputs—stereo pair plus 8 dedicated 1/4" jacks for separate processing. Slim at 400 x 194 x 55mm and just 1.3kg, it's built tough in Japan with RAM card support for quick pattern backups.

Over the years, players have warmed to its no-frills reliability and those separate outs for effects chains, though some note the stock sounds feel a bit plain until tuned or compressed—perfect for circuit benders chasing lo-fi grit in synth-pop, hip-hop, or retro electronic setups.
