Back in 2003, this synth pioneered VariPhrase technology, letting you grab a sample and independently tweak its pitch, time, and formant in real time—like freezing a vocal loop and dragging it backward or speeding it up without changing the key.

Dual variable oscillators deliver three synthesis flavors: analog modeling with fat waves like SuperSaw and Juno-style saws, PCM with over 300 presets plus user sampling into 50MB wave RAM (up to 280 seconds stereo after clearing factory content), and external audio processing to warp incoming signals through its engine. A huge 320x240 touchscreen handles editing alongside 20+ knobs, sliders, the revolutionary TimeTrip pad for scrubbing samples, twin D-Beams for gestural control like pitch bends or formants, and a 61-note velocity/aftertouch keyboard. Layer oscillators with FM, ring mod, or sync, route through COSM effects like sideband filters, resonators, and Lo-Fi processors, then hit MFX (41 types), chorus (8), reverb (10), and EQ; programmable arpeggiator and mod matrix add rhythmic depth. Stereo ins/outs, PC card slot for storage, and 24-voice polyphony round out the pro build.

Players love its hands-on weirdness for sound design—strange textures from warped samples or analog layers shine in electronic and experimental music—but note it's a hefty desktop beast at around 40 pounds, better for studio than gigs. The VC expansion cards are gold if you find them.
