Roland XP-50

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1995, this workstation packed the legendary JV-1080 sound engine into a keyboard with a built-in sequencer, making it one of the first all-in-one powerhouses for electronic music creators on the go.

Its PCM rompler heart draws from 448 high-quality 16-bit samples at 44kHz, delivering 64-voice polyphony across 16 parts, with TVF filters in LPF, HPF, BPF, and peak modes, plus three envelope generators and two LFOs for dynamic shaping. You'll find 640 preset patches including a GM set, 128 user patches, and up to 128 performances, expandable via four SR-JV80 slots for even more waveforms. The 61 full-size keys respond to velocity and channel aftertouch, paired with a backlit 40x2 LCD, data wheel, 58 buttons, modulation lever, and assignable sliders that control effects parameters in real time. A 16-track MRC-Pro sequencer holds 20,000 notes internally or up to 180,000 on its 3.5-inch floppy drive, with realtime/step recording, overdub, quantization, and SMF import. Stereo outs, MIDI I/O/Thru, and 40 multi-effects like auto-wah, rotary sim, overdrive, plus reverb and chorus, round out the pro features.

Players have long praised its fat, versatile sounds—from lush pads to punchy drums—and rock-solid build for stage or studio reliability, though some note the synth-action keys feel light compared to weighted boards.
