KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1986, this compact powerhouse brought sampling to the masses with its built-in Quick Disk drive, letting you load or save sounds on those quirky 2.8-inch floppies right from the keyboard—no computer needed.

At its heart, it's an 8-voice polyphonic digital sampler with 256KB of memory split across four banks, offering 4.4 seconds total sample time at a gritty 12-bit, 30kHz rate that delivers that classic lo-fi charm. The 49 full-size, velocity-sensitive keys span four octaves from C to C, paired with intuitive Alpha Juno-style controls like a large data dial for precise sample editing—tweak start/end points, loops (auto, manual, or one-shot), envelopes with velocity response, filtering, pitch bend, vibrato, and more. Performance shines with dual layering or splitting, a versatile arpeggiator (up/down/random modes, 1-3 octave range), a left-hand pitch/mod wheel that rocks forward for mod, stereo ins/outs, and hands-free sampling via threshold trigger from mic or line.

Vintage enthusiasts love its straightforward workflow and multitimbral tricks, like playing all four banks together, though some note the limited memory and obsolete disks keep it firmly in the "character piece" category rather than a workhorse.
