SP-404 MkII

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

The SP-404 MKII is the spiritual successor to one of beatmaking's most iconic samplers, refined through years of community feedback to become something that feels both familiar and genuinely evolved. Roland took the legendary SP-404 formula and modernized it without losing the soul that made the original indispensable in hip-hop, electronic music, and experimental production.

At its core, this is a 32-voice polyphonic sampler with 16GB of internal storage, capable of holding 160 samples per project across 16 internal projects. The centerpiece is a vivid OLED display paired with a zoomable waveform editor that makes sample chopping intuitive whether you're doing it in real time by tapping edit points or using the auto-chop mode to slice automatically. Once your samples are loaded, you can shape them with envelope controls and pitch shifting, then layer them using the redesigned resampling workflow that lets you re-record patterns and effects back into the device for deeper sound design. The 17 velocity-sensitive RGB pads respond with a no-click design that feels responsive without the unwanted artifacts, and they're flanked by updated knobs that give you hands-on control over your sound.

The effects section is where things get interesting. You get the classic SP effects like vinyl simulation and DJFX looper alongside newer additions like cassette simulation, lo-fi, resonator, vocoder, auto-pitch correction, and guitar amp simulation. The Bus FX system lets you layer multiple effects with customizable routing for complex textures. For live work, there's a dedicated DJ Mode that lets you manipulate and mix two separate audio files, plus Skip Back Sampling captures up to 40 seconds of your last performance so you never lose an accidental gem. The pattern sequencer supports BPM per bank, pattern chaining, and Pad Link to trigger multiple samples with a single press. Connectivity includes dual headphone outputs for collaboration, mic and guitar inputs, USB-C for streaming audio from mobile devices, and support for up to 32GB SD cards for expanded storage. The whole thing weighs 2.4 pounds and runs on AA batteries or USB power, making it genuinely portable.
