TR-707 Rhythm Composer Drum Machine

Drum MachineDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1985, this drum machine burst onto the scene with its pioneering use of PCM samples at just 12-bit depth, delivering that raw, lo-fi punch that's become a staple in techno, house, and hip-hop tracks from the era—think early New Order or 808 State vibes.

It packs 15 distinct digital drum voices like dual bass drums, snares, toms, rimshot/cowbell, handclap/tambourine, and hi-hats into a compact white chassis measuring about 380mm wide by 250mm high. Program up to 64 patterns across 4 tracks (expandable via optional M-64C cartridge), each with 1-16 steps per measure and lengths up to 998 bars, using the intuitive 16x10 LCD matrix display for step-time or real-time entry. Hands-on controls include 16 velocity-sensitive pads, per-instrument level sliders, dedicated accent and tempo knobs (38-250 BPM), shuffle settings, and track selectors, plus MIDI in/out, DIN sync, and trigger out for syncing with vintage gear like the MC-202. On the back, you'll find stereo master outs, 11 individual outputs for routing specific sounds, and a headphone jack.

Over the years, players have praised its gritty, characterful tones—especially the tuning and decay quirks from its analog circuitry—and reliable sequencer for quick, solid grooves, though some note the limited sound set compared to later Roland boxes. It's a timeless entry point into Roland's TR legacy, perfect for anyone chasing authentic '80s drum machine magic.
