RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 2000, this rackmount beast introduced VariPhrase technology, letting you stretch, pitch-shift, and tweak formants on vocal phrases or loops in real time—without the usual artifacts that plagued early samplers, opening up wild creative possibilities for producers.

At its core, it's a 2U digital processor with 6-voice polyphony across six parts, starting with 8MB RAM expandable to 136MB via SIMMs for up to 14 minutes of mono samples. Three prominent front-panel knobs give instant control over pitch, time, formant, and groove, handling all six parts at once while sending MIDI CC for automation. A big icon-based LCD simplifies wave editing, backed by an internal 250MB Zip drive for sample storage and PC/Mac transfers, plus SCSI ports, stereo audio in, four stereo outs, digital I/O, and killer effects like nine reverbs, chorus/flanger, and 40 multi-FX including COSM amps and tape echo.

Over the years, it's earned a cult following among remixers and live performers for its pristine audio manipulation—think syncing beats to any tempo or harmonizing vocals via MIDI keyboard. Some note the polyphony limit and sample time as constraints for huge projects, but its sound quality and hands-on tweaks keep it a go-to for turning raw audio into gold.
