W-30

Back in 1989, Roland dropped the W-30 as their pioneering music workstation, packing a self-contained sampler, sequencer, and keyboard into one box long before laptops dominated production setups. It borrowed the guts from the S-550 sampler and MRC sequencer, making it a trailblazer for hands-on sound design without needing extra gear.

This 61-key beast rocks velocity-sensitive keys with aftertouch, a pitch/mod wheel on the left, and three main modes: Performance for playing, Sequencer for 16-track recording up to 15k events across 20 songs, and Sound for deep editing. The 12-bit sampler captures at 15 or 30kHz into 512kW RAM—about 14 seconds total—while 512kW ROM holds 32 preset samples; mix them into 16 patches with auto-looping, truncate, combine, and a resonant digital low-pass filter plus dedicated amp envelopes. One LFO with sine or peak-hold waves adds movement, syncable and modulatable by aftertouch or MIDI. I/O includes stereo audio in, eight individual outs (one stereo main), SCSI for fast disk loading, 3.5-inch floppy drive, and full MIDI.

Vintage hunters love its gritty, characterful tones—perfect for that raw '80s hip-hop or industrial edge—and the S-50/S-330/S-550 sound library compatibility opens up endless public-domain waves. Some note the mono sampling and limited RAM as quirks by today's standards, but players dig the sequencer multitasking and sturdy build for live rigs.
