XP-10

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

Roland's mid-90s answer to affordable workstation synthesis, the XP-10 arrived when the line between preset-heavy performance keyboard and true synthesizer was still blurry—and it leaned hard into both camps without apology.

This is a 61-key velocity and aftertouch-sensitive digital synthesizer built around a 28-voice polyphonic engine with 16-part multitimbral capability, meaning you can layer or sequence up to 16 different sounds simultaneously. The sound engine draws from 4 megabytes of wave memory, giving you access to 338 preset tones plus space for 256 of your own edits, along with 36 drum kits and 64 performance setups. The signal path runs through a resonant low-pass filter and dual effect processors offering eight types each of reverb and chorus. You get a 16-character LCD display for navigation, stereo outputs plus headphone out, and a built-in arpeggiator that syncs to MIDI. The keyboard itself uses synth-weighted action rather than hammer action, keeping things responsive without the bulk. At just over five kilograms and roughly 40 inches wide, it sits comfortably between a portable controller and a full workstation.

The XP-10 found its audience among bedroom producers and live performers who needed GM/GS compatibility without the price tag of Roland's flagship models. The X-Dual function—which lets you blend upper and lower tones for hybrid sounds—became a favorite trick for getting beyond the preset sound library. Some users noted the synthesis engine itself isn't deep at the oscillator level, but that was never really the point; this was about accessible, usable sounds and solid MIDI integration for sequencing work. The compact footprint and straightforward interface meant less menu diving than competitors, which mattered when you were trying to focus on playing rather than editing.
