Fugue

KeyboardAnalogPolyphonic

Sequential Circuits' Fugue arrived in the early 1980s as a curious hybrid—a monophonic synthesizer that blended digital control with analog sound generation, sitting somewhere between a performance instrument and a preset-driven workstation at a time when most synths were still fully analog.

The Fugue runs on a single digitally controlled oscillator paired with a low-pass filter, envelope generator, and noise source, all designed to deliver focused, expressive monophonic tones. The 49-key keyboard features a pitch bender joystick and control slider on the left side, with the front panel packed with 44 levers and 6 buttons that give you hands-on access to synthesis parameters. Built-in portamento lets you slide between notes for smooth, vocal-like transitions. The instrument includes 13 preset sounds covering piano, strings, brass, organ, and more experimental textures like resonance and swell, stored in internal memory for instant recall.

What's interesting about the Fugue is how it positioned itself—offering the immediacy of presets and digital control at a moment when Sequential Circuits was simultaneously pushing the boundaries of polyphonic synthesis with instruments like the Prophet-5. The preset palette leans toward classic keyboard tones rather than wild sound design, making it practical for players who wanted reliable, usable sounds without deep menu diving. The lever-based interface gives it a tactile quality that rewards real-time tweaking, though the sheer number of controls means there's a learning curve to mapping them all to your workflow.
