Terra Desktop Touch Synthesizer

SOMA Laboratory's Terra represents a bold philosophical statement about synthesis: what if you could play a digital synth like you'd play an acoustic instrument, without menus or screens getting in the way? It's a fully digital synthesizer wrapped in a solid wooden slab, continuing the lineage of SOMA's touch-based instruments but with a fundamentally different approach to how you interact with sound.

The heart of Terra is its 12 velocity and pressure-sensitive metal note sensors arranged across the wooden surface, paired with four additional dynamic sensors for timbre control and two hold sensors for freezing parameters. Rather than a traditional keyboard layout, you navigate the full range of a grand piano through a clever transposition system using four pitch-shifting sensors that work in combination to give you 16 different keyboard variations, including octave shifts and interval transpositions. The 32 synthesis algorithms span FM, additive, subtractive, and physical modeling, all running on a 32-bit float DSP engine. A built-in three-axis gyroscope lets you add vibrato and expression through hand movement, while the onboard stereo effects processor offers reverb or delay. Eight control knobs handle synthesis parameters and volume, and you get 96 presets stored directly on the playing surface itself. The whole thing measures 16 by 15 inches and connects via MIDI with full MPE support, making it equally at home as a standalone instrument or as a controller in a larger setup.

Since its release in 2023, Terra has found an appreciative audience among experimental performers and sound designers who value its intuitive tactile interface and the way it encourages real-time sonic exploration rather than deep menu diving. The learning curve is real—the transposition system and microtonal tuning capabilities take time to master—but players consistently praise how the instrument rewards hands-on experimentation and opens up playing techniques that feel genuinely new.
