M.A.R.S. Monophonic Analog Rack

RackmountAnalogMonophonic

When Vermona released the M.A.R.S. in 2006, they proved that serious analog synthesis didn't require a desktop footprint the size of a small refrigerator. This German-built monophonic synthesizer squeezes genuine VCO-VCF-VCA architecture into just one rack unit and 2.5 inches of depth, making it a genuinely practical choice for anyone who wanted real analog warmth without sacrificing studio real estate.

The heart of the M.A.R.S. is its pair of voltage-controlled oscillators, each with sawtooth, square, and fixed-width pulse waveforms, plus two sub-oscillators tuned one and two octaves below that produce square waves for added depth and bass weight. You get a 24dB low-pass filter with self-resonance that can be modulated by either of two ADSR envelope generators, velocity, key tracking, or either of the two LFOs. The LFO section is where things get interesting: LFO1 handles oscillator pitch modulation while LFO2 controls the filter and amplitude, with both offering triangle, square, sine, and sample-and-hold waveforms. Each oscillator has independent glide control, and both ring modulation and oscillator sync are available for more complex tonal possibilities. The entire synth responds to MIDI with all parameters assignable to controllers like the modulation wheel and aftertouch, and it stores up to 128 programs in memory.

The M.A.R.S. earned respect in the community for delivering genuine analog character at a price point that didn't require selling gear to afford it. Players appreciated its straightforward menu-based interface despite the compact format, and the combination of sub-oscillators with modulation routing gave it surprising sonic range for a monophonic machine. It became a go-to choice for bass synthesis and lead work where analog grit mattered more than polyphony, and it remains sought after by people who value hands-on analog control in a format that actually fits in a working studio.
