Waldorf Microwave

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

Built on the legendary PPG Wave architecture, the original Microwave arrived in 1989 as Waldorf's answer to affordable wavetable synthesis, combining digitally sampled wavetables with analog warmth in a compact rackmount format that would influence synth design for decades.

The heart of this eight-voice instrument is its dual wavetable oscillators pulling from 64 ROM wavetables inherited directly from the PPG Wave 2.3, processed through a Curtis CEM analog 24dB-per-octave lowpass filter that gives the Microwave its signature character. Three envelope types shape the sound: a standard ADSR for volume, a delay-capable ADSR for filter modulation, and a unique eight-stage wave envelope with loopable sections that can generate rhythmic effects beyond typical LFO territory. The modulation matrix is surprisingly deep, allowing you to route sources like velocity, aftertouch, breath controller, and MIDI data to virtually any parameter. You get 64 internal patches plus another 64 via external memory card, and the operating system could be upgraded via EPROM chips throughout the 1990s, adding custom wavetable creation and other enhancements.

The single-knob, minimal-button design of the original hardware made deep editing cumbersome without an external controller, which remains the primary criticism from users who explored its sound design potential. However, those who invested the time to program patches discovered a synth capable of producing distinctly complex, expressive sounds that still hold up today. The Microwave became a cult classic precisely because of this character—it rewards patience with sonic depth that feels neither purely digital nor purely analog, but something genuinely its own.
