Yamaha's 1979 entry into the compact preset synth market arrived at a moment when most manufacturers were still figuring out how to balance accessibility with sonic depth, and the CS-15D found an elegant middle ground by splitting its personality across two independent channels that could work together or separately.
The CS-15D pairs 29 factory presets split between two channels with a dedicated manual control section that gives you real hands-on synthesis. Channel 1 offers 15 preset tones covering the usual bread-and-butter sounds, while Channel 2 provides 14 synth-oriented presets plus access to the manual section where you can shape your own sounds. The heart of the manual engine is a single voltage-controlled oscillator with continuously variable pulse and saw waveforms, complemented by a noise generator and a 12-decibel lowpass filter with its own dedicated ADSR envelope—a thoughtful design choice that lets you modulate the filter independently from the amplifier. A separate ADSR handles the amp, and a single LFO with sine, square, and sample-and-hold modes can be routed to pitch, filter, or amplitude. The 37-key keyboard includes portamento, pitch and modulation wheels, and a brilliance slider for tonal shaping. Both channels have individual CV and gate inputs for external sequencer control, and you can mix between them with a crossfader or route each to separate outputs.
The CS-15D earned respect among players for its warm, characterful sound despite having just one oscillator per section, and the filter's design—which maintains low-end presence even at high resonance and doesn't self-oscillate—became something of a signature trait. The preset section can feel dated and unrealistic by modern standards, but that limitation actually pushed users toward the manual controls where the real personality lives. The lack of user memory means you're working with what Yamaha gave you, but the dual-channel architecture and flexible modulation routing proved flexible enough that the CS-15D remained a capable performance instrument throughout its production run from 1979 to 1982.
