RackmountDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 1998, this rackmount module dropped a bombshell on the synth world with its Formant Shaping Synthesis, blending classic FM tones with vocal-like formants and noise elements for sounds no other box could touch quite like it.

At its core sits an 8-operator FM engine—split into 8 voiced operators for rich harmonics (sine plus All1, Odd, Res waveforms and formants) and 8 unvoiced ones for breathy noise and percussion—routed through 88 algorithms, multimode resonant filters, and multi-stage envelopes for pitch, amplitude, and frequency. Dual LFOs, a deep modulation matrix, and formant sequencers let you craft evolving vocal phrases or wild loops, all with 32-note polyphony across 4-16 parts multitimbrally. The 1U silver chassis packs four front-panel knobs for real-time tweaks, MIDI I/O, dual stereo outs, headphone jack, and built-in effects: 16 reverbs, 28 variations (chorus, flange), 40 insertions, plus 3-band EQ. Stacks 1536 voices and 512 performances, even importing DX7 patches.

Over the years, it's earned a cult following among sound designers for its otherworldly textures in electronic and experimental music, though some find the front-panel editing cryptic without a computer editor—still, that complexity rewards deep dives with endless unique rewards.
