RX17 Digital Rhythm Programmer

Drum MachineDigitalPolyphonic

When Yamaha released the RX17 in 1987, they were betting that bedroom producers and gigging musicians wanted something simpler than the RX7 but more capable than a basic drum box, and they nailed that sweet spot with this one.

The RX17 is a compact digital drum machine built around 26 PCM drum and percussion samples that capture that unmistakable lo-fi character of late 80s drum machines. You get 13 instrument keys, each capable of switching between two different sounds, giving you access to all 26 voices across a compact footprint. The machine supports up to 11 simultaneous voices, so you can layer kicks, snares, and hi-hats without running into polyphony limits. Programming happens in either real-time mode (play along with a click guide) or step mode for precise timing, with quantization options to lock everything into the grid. You can store up to 100 custom patterns and chain them into 20 different songs, complete with tempo and volume changes. The LCD display and rubber button interface keep navigation straightforward, and MIDI compatibility means you can sync it with other gear or control it from a sequencer.

The RX17 has earned a modest but genuine following among lo-fi producers and vintage gear enthusiasts who appreciate its characterful sound and straightforward workflow. It's not trying to sound pristine or modern, and that's exactly why people reach for it. The cassette backup system feels quaint now, but it worked reliably for archiving your patterns back in the day. If you're looking for authentic 80s drum machine character without the complexity of higher-end units, this delivers the goods at a price point that won't break the bank on the used market.
