TX816

RackmountDigital

Back in 1984, this beast crammed the equivalent of eight DX7s into a single 4U rack, unleashing 128 voices of pure FM magic for those epic studio layers that single synths just couldn't touch.

It's built around eight swappable TF1 modules, each a full 6-operator FM engine with 32 algorithms, dedicated 4-stage envelopes per operator, pitch envelopes, and an LFO offering saw, square, triangle, sine, and random waves. Pressure and velocity sensitivity respond beautifully via MIDI, feeding into detailed modulation from aftertouch, LFO, and CCs, all while supporting 256 editable patches across 32 banks of 8. Physically, it's a sturdy 480x346x176mm black rack unit weighing 12kg, with eight independent XLR stereo outputs for precise mixing—no onboard effects or front-panel edits, so pair it with a MIDI controller or editor for full control.

Vintage players cherish its glassy, metallic tones that defined 80s pop and fusion, from Herbie Hancock sessions to custom pads and basses that still cut through mixes today. Watch for capacitor replacements on older units, but when serviced, it delivers that classic FM punch without compromise.
