ST-224 Sampletrak Sampler

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

Back in the early 2000s, this vintage Zoom sampler captured hearts by delivering pro-level sampling power in a desktop box that felt like a secret weapon for beatmakers chasing that raw, lo-fi edge.

At its core, it runs a digital sampling engine with three rates—Hi-Fi at 32kHz for 60 seconds total mono time, Standard at 16kHz for 120 seconds, or Lo-Fi at 8kHz stretching to 240 seconds—letting you dial in gritty character or cleaner tones, all via 18-bit A/D and D/A conversion. Eight velocity-sensitive pads across three banks plus a source pad trigger up to eight mono or four stereo samples simultaneously, with real-time recording, editing, and resampling right from the front panel's Edit 1 wheel, Edit 2 knob, Effect Type selector, and input/output controls. A pattern sequencer holds eight songs with around 5000 notes at 40-250 BPM, plus 22 onboard effects like Time Stretch, Extreme EQ, pitch shifting, and even a compressor mimicking classic vinyl warmth, all enhanced by Intelligent Autosync for tempo-matching samples without pitch shifts. MIDI In, dual audio ins/outs, headphone jack, and a SmartMedia card slot round out its compact black desktop design, made in Japan for reliable hands-on workflow.

Beatmakers love its punchy, unpolished sound for hip-hop and lo-fi beats, often calling it a budget SP-1200 alternative, though some note the pads aren't velocity-sensitive and SmartMedia cards can be tricky to source today.
