Phantasm OS
firmwaregithub.com
Phantasm OS is a wavetable synthesizer operating system for the Ensoniq Mirage that replaces the sampler's own OS. Single-cycle 8-bit waves are scanned under envelope, LFO, velocity, key, mod wheel and pressure control and played through the Mirage's analog filters, and each new note can step through a programmed sequence of waves, so held chords and repeated notes keep changing. The lo-fi character of the 8-bit playback is part of the sound. It plays eight voices of two oscillators each, with three envelopes and an LFO per voice, detune, noise and hard-sync options, poly, mono and unison modes with glide and drift, and a chord keyboard mode. Each disk holds 100 patches and a pool of factory and noise waves, plus a user area filled with the owner's own waves over MIDI Sample Dump. Every parameter can be edited from the stock front panel, most have MIDI CCs, and a browser-based editor and librarian works over Web MIDI. It loads from floppy like the stock OS, in practice from a floppy emulator disk image, and never touches the boot ROM.
