BOSS DR-55 Dr. Rhythm

Drum MachineAnalogPolyphonic

One of the very first step-write drum machines ever made, this little box kicked off Boss's legendary Dr. Rhythm series back in 1980, delivering that instant '80s groove in a compact metal chassis you could toss in a gig bag.

Pure analog heart with just four classic voices—bass drum, snare, rim shot, and hi-hat—each tweakable via dedicated level knobs and a shared filter for tuning the bite. Step-program up to eight patterns: six 16-step for straight-ahead beats, plus two 12-step ones perfect for waltzes or shuffles in 3/4 and 6/8 time, all with accent control to punch things up. Chunky start/stop buttons, tempo dial, footswitch jack for live switching, clock out for syncing gear, and a single 1/4-inch mono out at line level; runs on batteries or adapter, always ready to rumble.

Folks still chase these for their raw, cheesy charm—those sounds cut through mixes like nothing else, though the limited palette and no song chaining keep it firmly in fun, no-fuss territory. A true vintage gem for anyone digging early electronic beats.
