BOSS SP-202 Dr. Sample

MicroDigitalPolyphonic

Back in 2000, this little brick kicked off Boss's legendary SP series, bringing portable sampling to DJs and beatmakers who needed something rugged and ready for the road without breaking the bank.

It's a compact digital sampler—145 x 221 x 83 mm and just 850g—with 4-voice polyphony so you can layer up to four samples at once across eight large, responsive pads split into four banks (A/B internal, C/D via SmartMedia card). Record via built-in mic, stereo line in, or even import WAV/AIFF on 2-4MB cards, choosing from four rates: Hi-Fi at 31.25kHz (32 sec mono max internal) down to grungy Lo-Fi 2 at 3.91kHz (over 4 min mono). Twist the two main knobs to dial in six effects—pitch shift, resonant filters, time stretch, delay, ring mod—plus a BPM calculator that auto-syncs loops from sample length; MIDI In handles note triggers, and it runs 8 hours on six AA batteries with stereo outs and headphone jack.

Over two decades on, folks still hunt these down for their warm, lo-fi vibe and dead-simple workflow—pad-smashing fun for hip-hop chops or live glitch, though some note the fixed sample parameters and no resample on effects keep it raw and limited by design.
