Con Brio ADS 200

KeyboardDigitalPolyphonic

When Con Brio set out to build the ultimate digital synthesizer in 1980, they didn't hold back—the result was a machine so ambitious that only two were ever constructed, and at thirty thousand dollars, it represented the cutting edge of what synthesis technology could achieve.

The ADS 200 packed 64 oscillators capable of generating sine, square, triangle, and pulse waves, all working together through additive synthesis, FM with 256 possible operator configurations, and phase distortion techniques borrowed from the Casio CZ sound design philosophy. The dual 61-key keyboards were fully splittable and could be assigned to different patches independently, with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch control for expressive playing. Two 16-stage graphic envelopes gave you precise control over both frequency and amplitude across all voices, while a built-in four-track sequencer with staff notation display on an integrated video monitor let you compose and arrange directly on the instrument. The control panel was a riot of color-coded pushbuttons and knobs, backed by 32 patch memories and 32 performance slots, with a 5.25-inch floppy disk drive for saving your work. CV and gate connectivity meant you could integrate it into a larger modular setup, and the oscillator count was theoretically expandable to 256 for even deeper sound design possibilities.

The ADS 200 arrived at a moment when most synthesizer designers were still refining analog circuitry, making its digital architecture and esoteric synthesis methods feel genuinely alien to the market. The unfamiliar sound generation approach and premium price tag meant it never found mainstream adoption, but those who encountered it recognized the sophistication of its design and the remarkable flexibility it offered. The one surviving unit has become something of a legend in synth collecting circles, a reminder of an era when manufacturers were willing to build instruments for the future rather than the present.
