Stylophone Stylosette Keys Portable Cassette Synthesizer

AnalogMonophonic

The Stylophone Stylosette Keys is Dubreq's answer to the question nobody asked but everyone needed: what if you could fit a classic analog synthesizer into a cassette tape? Released as an official compact reimagining of their legendary Stylophone, this pocket-sized synth captures that iconic buzzy, lo-fi character that made the original a cult favorite, but strips away the stylus requirement entirely.

The heart of the Stylosette is a single analog oscillator paired with a touch-sensitive metal keyboard surface divided into 13 segments. You simply slide your finger across the metal pads to trigger notes across a three-octave range, with smooth glide transitions or crisp taps depending on how you interact with it. The onboard effects are deliberately minimal but effective: a voltage-controlled vibrato with adjustable speed and depth, plus a delay circuit with tweakable time and repeat parameters that can range from subtle slapback to ambient wash. All parameter adjustments happen via a small screwdriver, which keeps the interface clean and forces you to commit to your sound choices rather than endlessly tweaking. The built-in speaker delivers surprisingly full sound for something the size of a cassette case, and there's a 3.5mm headphone output for silent practice or recording.

What sets the Stylosette apart is its expansion port on the underside, which opens up genuinely creative possibilities. You can connect conductive objects—bananas, vegetables, metal spoons, even plants—using the included crocodile clip cables to create custom control surfaces. You can also link two Stylosettes together in master-slave mode or connect external sequencers. The whole thing runs on two AAA batteries and weighs just 45 grams, making it genuinely pocketable. Since its release, the Stylosette has found an enthusiastic audience among musicians who appreciate its constraints as creative tools rather than limitations, and it's become a go-to recommendation for anyone wanting a playable, portable synth that doesn't take itself too seriously.
