Little Deformer 2 Desktop Synthesizer w/ SP Box

DesktopDigitalPolyphonic

Gotharman's Little deFormer 2 arrived in a landscape where granular synthesis was still finding its footing in affordable hardware, and it immediately stood out as something different—a desktop workstation that treated time-stretching and sample manipulation as seriously as traditional synthesis. The Danish company built this machine around the idea that you could record audio, chop it into grains, and reshape it in real-time using a set of tools that felt more like a creative instrument than a processor.

The heart of the Little deFormer 2 is its granular engine paired with a 100-minute sampler that lets you record directly into the unit without loading times. Once samples are captured, you can trigger them like waveforms across 16 samplings per preset, or layer in built-in oscillators that morph smoothly between sine, triangle, saw, square, and noise. The sequencer gives you 32 step tracks for melodic sequencing plus 4 controller tracks for automating parameters, with 512 presets and 512 songs available. Special effects like TimeStretcher, Step-Granulator, and PitchShaper sit alongside more conventional tools like reverb, delay, distortion, and filters. You get 16 voice-triggered random modulators, a modulation matrix with 32 simultaneous sources and destinations, and full MIDI control over most parameters. The unit features dual mono inputs and stereo outputs with 24-bit A/D and D/A conversion, plus an expansion port for connecting the optional SP Box and other Gotharman expanders.

The Little deFormer 2 found a dedicated following among sound designers and experimental musicians who appreciated its deep sequencing capabilities and the way it blurred lines between sampling, synthesis, and effects processing. The compact footprint with its large display made navigation straightforward, and the shortcut labels printed directly on the front panel kept workflow intuitive. Some users noted the learning curve could be steep given the depth of modulation options, but those who invested the time discovered a remarkably flexible tool for everything from beat-making to ambient texture creation.
