MDX is extended firmware for the Elektron Machinedrum SPS-1, for UW and non-UW units, developed independently with Elektron's permission by Yatao Li and Justin Mammarella. It adds new synthesis machines, including sine, saw and pulse oscillator machines and a Neighbor FX class with a compressor, an envelope-driven ring modulator and comb filters that process neighbouring tracks, along with tonal tuning for more machines, extra LFO shapes, a solo mode, tracks that trigger several other tracks, and tighter handling of incoming MIDI notes and controllers. The expanded sequencer offers up to 64 steps, independent track lengths and speeds, microtiming, conditional trigs, fills and retrigs, and patterns can carry their own tempo. Each track gains a second LFO and its own envelope, kits can store output routing, the internal sample set can be replaced, and custom user machines can be installed over MIDI SysEx, with machine banks on +Drive units. An extended SysEx mode lets external controllers edit the Machinedrum.

Kitbasher is a browser-based sound-machine builder for the Elektron Machinedrum. Users select community drum and synthesis engines, arrange their machine-menu categories and generate a custom system update that retains the stock machines. The available models span electronic percussion, synth voices, noise programs, physical modelling and filtering. Build processing stays in the browser, using the owner's system file. Layout and project tools help retain a chosen selection of machines, while hardware-model settings account for differences between Machinedrum configurations. The resulting update can be downloaded or sent over MIDI from the browser, giving the instrument a sound palette tailored to a particular setup.

murdenihcam USR machines is a collection of custom user machines for the Elektron Machinedrum, installed over MIDI SysEx into the user machine slots of the MDX extended firmware. Three are sample machines: a transient-detecting slicer and looper whose slice number can be parameter-locked, a timestretch machine with grain size and grain jitter controls that can slow a sample to a frozen texture, and a granulator with density, seek, scan, grain size and spray controls. The fourth is a multi-mode modulation effect for the neighbouring tracks, with pitch-shifting delay, flanger, three-voice chorus, doubler and frequency-shifter modes and its own trig-driven envelope. The sample machines come in versions that read the UW sample ROM, the internal sample set, or both. The internal-only versions and the effect work on any Machinedrum running MDX, while the ROM versions need a Machinedrum UW.
