Tonitor
firmwaregithub
Tonitor is alternative firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1 by Nuno Zimas, built for electroacoustic experimentation, live ambient music and sound exploration. Six tracks combine independently chosen engines and sounds with free loop recorders, each supporting up to ten overdubs and its own loop length. Four engines cover six-operator FM, gesture-driven lo-fi synthesis, an eight-oscillator instrument inspired by the LYRA-8, and noise, logic operations and manipulated buffers. Generative paths bias new sounds toward ambient or experimental textures. Per-track envelopes, resonant filtering, granulation, bit and sample-rate reduction, and shared effects shape sustained notes and layered gestures. Sixty-four session slots store the performance state. The interface uses large text, high contrast and a distinct colour for each track to support low vision.
ChoralRoot FM-1
firmwaregithub.com

Each voice has two oscillators with hard sync and cross-modulation, a multimode filter with a lowpass-to-highpass morph, two envelopes, and an LFO. Poly, dual, unison, and mono modes include glide, with adjustable vintage drift and stereo spread. An arpeggiator, 32 programs, USB MIDI, chorus, tempo-synced delay, and plate reverb complete the instrument. Built on Dinghy, it is host-tested, but the developer reports that it has not yet been run on an FM-1.
Vector37
firmwaregithub
Vector37 is experimental synthesizer firmware for the M-VAVE SMK-37 Pro, inspired by the Beetlecrab Vector. Four corner sounds each combine two overtone generators, a blend control, and a filter. A sun follows a path while a moon orbits it; the moon’s position determines the mix of the four sounds. Pads select and control the planets, eight knobs shape the selected sound, and four faders adjust the path’s family, size, speed, and morph. Eight stored sounds provide starting points, and TRS MIDI output sends the keys and wheels. A browser simulator lets you explore the engine and screen before installing.
Frodhes
firmwaregithub
Frodhes is an electric-piano firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1 that models the mechanics of a Fender Rhodes. Its voice engine simulates a hammer, tine, tonebar and magnetic pickup, with four instrument types: Stage 77, Suitcase, Early Felt and Bell Dyno. A performance page gives the four knobs assignable controls, while dedicated pages expose the voice and effects. The effects chain includes compression, drive, tremolo or wah, phaser, chorus, delay and reverb. Chord mode, scales, an arpeggiator and a pattern recorder with quantization, overdub and undo support playing and recording. It includes twelve factory and sixteen user presets, USB and TRS MIDI, MIDI clock sync and a browser emulator running the firmware as WebAssembly.
Clipper
firmwaregithub
Clipper turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a multi-engine synthesizer for sound design and performance. The HYBRID voice combines three oscillators, two filters, envelopes, LFOs and a modulation matrix, with macros for hands-on control. Layer, split and multitimbral modes provide ways to combine sounds. An arpeggiator and step sequencer support melodic patterns, while insert effects, chorus, delay, reverb, EQ and compression shape the output. The browser editor offers live parameter editing, pattern tools, sound management, project backups, DX7 bank import and custom wavetables. USB audio, USB and TRS MIDI, and expressive controller support connect it to a computer or other instruments.
MAKU
firmwaregithub.com
MAKU turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a generative ambience instrument that starts making music as soon as it is switched on. Layers of sound develop within a shared musical key, providing a continuous starting point for atmospheric passages, transitions and open-ended listening. Performance gestures let you push, lift, scramble and reshape the music while retaining ideas you want to keep. The interface favours direct interaction over detailed pattern programming, making it suited to gradual changes and spontaneous interventions. A browser emulator lets you explore its generative approach before using the instrument on hardware.
Polly
firmwaregithub.com
Polly turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a pocket arranger whose accompaniment follows the chords you play. Styles bring drums, bass, percussion and chord parts together using General MIDI sounds. Songs are assembled from sections and chord progressions, with melody parts running alongside the accompaniment. Grooves can be edited and recorded while retaining their original style, and instrument mutes shape the arrangement across a song. MIDI input also lets Polly work as a General MIDI sound module for other gear. A browser emulator, manual and lesson course provide ways to learn the workflow, from playing along with a style to building a complete arrangement.
Rainbow mode
firmwaregithub.com
Rainbow mode turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a colourful music instrument for children. Cartoon characters, note colours and matching rhythms make sounds and musical relationships easier to explore. Chords, strumming, guided songs and listening games provide different ways to play. Simplified controls shape the size, tone, movement and echo of a sound, while a volume cap helps keep the instrument manageable for younger players. Pictures and animations connect each sound to a visual character. A browser emulator offers a way to try the experience, and a web installer provides access to the FM-1 application.
