Alt Firmware
firmware

A 12-bit sampling drum machine for the M-VAVE FM-1: 32 sounds at 26.04 kHz (or 27.5 kHz), pitched without interpolation, eight output channels with their filters, a panel-style screen. Inspired by the 12-bit samplers of the 80s; their names are trademarks of their owners, no affiliation. What zp12 is • 32 pads at 26.04 kHz (SP-1200 rate) or 27.5 kHz (SP-12 rate), 12-bit linear • pitch by the playback rate, no interpolation: tuned up it skips samples, down it repeats them • stored fast, played slow: 45 → 33 per sound, own samples at ×2 or ×2.7 (an octave down on the pad) • 8 channels: 1–2 with a resonant 4-pole low-pass that follows the decay, 3–6 fixed, 7–8 raw • 16 loops on the black keys, songs, real-time recording with count-in and AUTO CORRECT, step editing, swing • TUNE / DECAY / CUT recorded per hit while you turn them • a DJ filter on the whole mix, chorus, delay in tempo, reverb, drive per pad • your own samples: drop a WAV, AIFF, MP3 or FLAC in the browser, trim it, hear it as the FM-1 plays it, put it on a pad • backup and restore in the browser; the sloopDX DX7 banks can stay or make room for samples

Similar Alt Firmware

Jangada
firmwarezednaked.github.io
Jangada is free, open-source alternate firmware by zednaked for the M-VAVE FM-1, based on Felucca. It focuses on dark industrial textures, evolving drones and Brazilian rhythms. Four tracks share eight voices, with synthesis including superwave analog, six-operator FM compatible with Dexed, physical modeling, granular textures and noise. A modulation matrix, live macro controls and latched drones with evolution and tension controls expand sound design. The sequencer supports chords, ratchets, probability, accents, slides and swing. Industrial and Brazilian drum kits sit alongside tape processing, distortion, insert effects and live punch-in effects. Jangada Studio runs the firmware’s DSP in the browser for playing without an FM-1, while the browser editor provides device control and sequencing. The project is currently alpha; installation and return to stock firmware are documented upstream.
JIANT FM
firmwarejuanjiant-bit.github.io
JIANT FM is free, open-source alternate firmware by juanjiant-bit for the M-VAVE FM-1, based on Felucca with a song system adapted from SLOOP. It combines eight synthesis engines, including analog, six-operator FM, phase distortion, chiptune, formant voice, organ, noise and DRUM-X synthesized drums. DRUM-X morphs between two sound states, while sound randomization and macro controls encourage live experimentation. Its thermal-color interface visualizes each track as an animated organism and displays live graphs for modulation and effects. Sequencing includes parameter locks, ratchets, probability, automation and recordable punch-in effects, with eight songs organized into four sections each. Distortion, delay, chorus and five reverb models extend the sound. A browser emulator and editor are available. The project is in development and has not yet been thoroughly tested on hardware.
Ghoulbox
firmwarejasonpersinger.me
Ghoulbox is free, open-source alternate firmware by Jason Persinger for the M-VAVE FM-1, based on Felucca. It focuses on dungeon synth, dark ambient and medieval fantasy sounds, adding a hurdy-gurdy engine, cathedral-style HALL reverb, cassette-style tape processing and bit/sample-rate reduction. Its curated sounds include choirs, organs, harps, flutes, dark strings, drones and crypt drums. Felucca’s sequencer, song mode, effects, browser editor and backup workflow remain available. Ghoulbox adds dungeon-themed patterns, MIDI CC control and an old-RPG interface with a skull startup screen, sword cursor and animated torches. A prepared scene starts in D minor at 72 BPM. The browser installer connects to the FM-1 over USB and saves a backup before installing.
Sloop
firmwaregithub
Sloop is free, open-source alternate firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1, based on Felucca. It turns the instrument into a four-track groovebox with three synth tracks and a 16-sound drum machine. Nine synthesis engines cover analog, four-operator FM, phase distortion, three-oscillator synthesis, tonewheel organ, formant voice, granular synthesis, lo-fi chip sounds and sampling. Designed for live performance, it combines loop recording and overdubbing with step sequencing, per-step levels and ratchets, swing, polymeters, one-key chords and 16 punch-in effects. Sections A–D can be performed live and recorded into a song. A browser-based editor provides parameter control, a drum grid, preset management and sample upload; firmware installation is also available through the browser over USB.
Felucca
firmwarehugelton.itch.io
Felucca is free, open-source alternate firmware by Hügelton Instruments for the M-VAVE FM-1. It turns the instrument into a four-track synthesizer with three synth parts and a GM drum track, sharing eight voices. Nine engines cover virtual analog, FM, phase distortion, chiptune, sampling, formant vocals, ring modulation, tonewheel organ and granular synthesis. Each track has a 64-step sequencer, with live loop recording and overdubbing. An arpeggiator, scale quantization, effects and a browser-based editor expand the workflow. USB handles MIDI and firmware installation without extra hardware. The developer labels Felucca as beta; the official M-VAVE updater can restore the stock firmware.
FM-1+VA
firmwarebaudgirl.com
A custom firmware for the FM-1, focused on live performance, quality-of-life features, and the addition of a brand-new Virtual Analog engine.
FoMni
firmwarecharlesvestal.github.io
FoMni turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a chord harp inspired by the Suzuki Omnichord. The 16 white keys act as a strum plate, while the 11 black keys select chords. Two blendable harp voices sit alongside an organ-style chord and bass, with ten OM-84-inspired rhythms and optional synchronized bass and chord accompaniment. Controls cover sustain, levels, tempo, transposition, chord assignments, and reverb. USB MIDI lets the harp, chord, bass, and drums drive external instruments, and incoming notes can pluck the strings. A browser emulator lets you try FoMni without hardware, and a web installer loads it onto the FM-1.
SloopDX
firmwaredx7.designburgapps.com
SloopDX is a beta alternative firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1 that combines SLOOP’s live groovebox workflow with a six-operator DX7 engine based on Dexed. It provides 32 FM algorithms, on-device voice editing, DX7 SysEx bank loading, three synth tracks, and a programmable FM drum track. The sequencer supports patterns up to 128 steps per track, with a shared 256-step pool, plus song mode, overdubbing, swing, and performance layers. Chorus, delay, reverb, and punch-in effects shape the sound, while a browser installer and web editor handle installation, sound editing, and backups.
X0X
firmwaregithub
X0X is a beta groovebox firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1 and a fork of Felucca. It combines TR-909 and TR-808 drum engines, two TB-303-style parts with TB-3PO acid generators, and an eight-slice breakbeat generator. All five parts can run together, with 16 patterns, per-part step lengths and rates, song mode, and recorded knob movements. Shared reverb and digital or tape delay sends feed a master compressor with kick-keyed pumping, a resonant filter, and a limiter. A browser emulator lets you try the firmware without an FM-1.
