FM-SWITCH

FM-SWITCH is a free native firmware manager for the M-VAVE FM-1. It lets you browse firmware, save it for offline use and switch the connected FM-1 over USB. It checks firmware packages and the connected device before installation, verifies the result afterward and can resume an interrupted install. Optional iCloud sync keeps saved firmware available across Apple devices. The app can back up projects and samples when the FM-1 is running M-VAVE’s open firmware. On Mac, it also supports whole-flash backup and restore through the FM-1’s download mode. The desktop app requires macOS 14 or later; iPhone and iPad versions are available through TestFlight. Windows and Linux builds are not listed by the developer.

Open500 adds a small loader to Akai MPC500 OS 1.31, allowing WAV-based add-ons to appear as native pages in the OTHER menu. Available tools include a 16-step grid sequencer, BPM and transient chopping, tempo warping, sample effects, pad utilities, live master effects and input monitoring. The HUB manages up to eight add-ons at once. The project website patches your own official OS 1.31 file locally in the browser. No hardware modification is required, and flashing the original OS removes the loader. Add-ons can be loaded from CompactFlash or placed in the autoload folder. Open500 reserves 896 KB of sample memory and has been tested by the developer on one MPC500 running OS 1.31.

A receiving track takes another track's sound through its own overdrive, filter, amp envelope, panning and effect sends, allowing longer processing chains and layered effects within the instrument. Source selection, input level, output gain and pitch shifting provide control over the routed sound. These parameters can be saved, parameter-locked and modulated as part of a pattern. The receiving track's triggers and envelope determine when audio passes through the chain. By treating one track as a processing stage for another, digineighbor opens up more involved sound-design and performance routing.

VOWEL and SCREAM filters, four additional drive types and Hearth macros expand sound shaping. A 49-genre generator creates patterns and arrangements, while ORBIT and DRIFT mutation modes vary notes and timbre. Its screen combines filter curves, reactive spectra, live scopes and animated visualizers. The browser emulator runs the firmware; a companion Web Studio provides editing, pattern-based tape lanes and WAV export. The tape lanes hold note patterns rather than recorded audio.

The available models span electronic percussion, synth voices, noise programs, physical modelling and filtering. Build processing stays in the browser, using the owner's system file. Layout and project tools help retain a chosen selection of machines, while hardware-model settings account for differences between Machinedrum configurations. The resulting update can be downloaded or sent over MIDI from the browser, giving the instrument a sound palette tailored to a particular setup.

Switch between supported firmware cores without reflashing the FM-1 each time, connect over USB or Bluetooth MIDI, and route host audio through the FM-1 over USB. Without a host, RemoteFM1 provides a DX7-style synthesizer with voice cartridges, an arpeggiator, scales, a loop recorder and MIDI-controller functions. The browser player supports imported RFM1 firmware files, while the companion iOS app offers touch controls and an AUv3 instrument for compatible music hosts. A browser installer handles the initial firmware installation. Host mode requires a compatible firmware core; it does not emulate the stock M-VAVE firmware.

A sequencer with up to 64 steps per track combines live recording, patterns and arrangement sections. A three-track mixer, choke groups, filter, delay, chorus, reverb, distortion and compression shape the performance. USB audio sampling records incoming audio from a computer into the selected song or drum pad, with input metering, threshold-triggered recording, auditioning and trimming before saving. Browser tools handle sample preparation, chop collections and complete-session backups, while an emulator lets you play with your own audio and record its output. Internal resampling and live USB-input monitoring are not supported.

Felucca Salt combines a multi-engine instrument for the M-VAVE FM-1 with a browser-based studio for playing and editing. Synth sounds, patterns and performance controls are presented through a companion interface that can work with a connected device or generate audio in the browser. The studio includes an oscilloscope, themed panels, configurable control layouts and an on-screen keyboard. These tools support experimenting with sounds, adjusting the instrument and exploring its controls from a computer. Browser playback and connected-device editing provide complementary ways to work with the same musical ideas.

It's modified firmware that reads the screen aloud, so a blind musician can get at the menus, settings and sample names that are otherwise locked behind the display. The voice is OpenEVV, a reimplementation of IBM's Embedded ViaVoice, running on the SP itself. If you've used Eloquence, it will sound familiar. Tallfree isn't made or supported by Roland. You install it at your own risk, but you can always go back to Roland's firmware; see below.

Its parameters can be saved, parameter-locked and controlled over MIDI, making the model part of the existing pattern workflow. A companion site provides an audio demonstration, while the project supplies the module and build resources for a compatible custom setup.

Its audio optimization moves frequently used rendering code into faster internal memory, reducing memory stalls while preserving the underlying audio calculations. A system-information display brings processing load, RAM use and free sample memory onto the instrument's top bar. Read-only diagnostics can also send measurements to a computer, helping users inspect rendering time and the state of the optimization. Controls are integrated into the settings menu, and integrity checks provide a fallback to the original audio code. The tools are aimed at understanding the instrument's workload and making better use of its processing headroom.

External audio recording and resampling bring sampled material into the instrument’s sequencing workflow. A browser patcher builds the modified system from the owner’s Elektron OS files and verifies the result before download. The companion sample-import tool sends WAV files and folders over USB MIDI, while on-device controls handle recording, sample selection and slice editing. This project is for Digitone II; the other instruments supply source data for the build.

The instrument can play by itself or follow your chords, with an easy keyboard mode that keeps harmonies within the selected key. Players can generate new figures, keep useful ideas, bring layers in and out, and grow or shift patterns during a performance. Song recording captures these interactions, while a browser emulator lets you explore the instrument without hardware.

Noiz Demons is a Felucca-based FM-1 firmware by SPIKE the Percussionist that turns sound randomization into a themed performance tool. Its per-track Ritual mode selects from 30 demon characters, with each rank controlling how widely parameters can change. A summoning can reroll an entire track, an FM6 patch, or an envelope, LFO, or effects section. Each track displays its own animated sigil that responds to the sound. Summoned sounds can be saved as presets or projects and recorded as automation. Turning Ritual off restores normal editing and graphs. Installation uses a locally built firmware package and the project’s USB-MIDI flashing tool.

SIDOU turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a C64-style SID synthesizer and tracker. Two SID emulations offer 6581 and 8580 models with adjustable chip age, DAC character, thump and filter bleed. Play from the keys or MIDI, shape sounds with the panel knobs, and add distortion, modulation and stereo effects. A song can play on one chip while you perform on the other. Write music in step-sequencer and tracker views, edit orders, instruments and tables, and record notes and filter movements over a looping pattern. Parameter locks shape individual steps, and songs save to flash as GoatTracker 2 .sng files for exchange with the desktop tracker. The browser demo emulates the FM-1 with persistent local storage; a separate Web MIDI song page transfers showcase songs to connected hardware. On-device help cards explain the controls, and animated scenes respond to the music.

Matryoshka turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into a modular synthesizer with a browser patch editor. Connect oscillators, envelopes, filters, effects and sequencing modules, then group them into reusable assemblies that can contain other assemblies. The same approach supports FM voices, subtractive instruments, synthesized drums, granular textures and resonant percussion. Patches can be played in the browser before being sent to the hardware over USB MIDI. Assign the FM-1’s four knobs to useful parameters, set their ranges and morph between two versions of a patch without stopping the notes. The editor provides a patch library, sharing and a virtual FM-1 panel, alongside an arpeggiator with Euclidean rhythms and random variation. Polyphony depends on the patch’s processing load. The browser app also includes firmware installation and a return-to-stock option.

A reorderable effects chain includes filtering, reverb, delay, chorus, phaser and drive. Record notes or arpeggios into patterns, edit phrases and arrange them across song lanes. Track controls support volume, mute, solo and pattern launches for performance, with USB MIDI notes and clock and TRS MIDI input. Effects are shared across tracks. Built-in grooves, loop recording with a count-in, saved songs and bar-aligned playback controls support making and performing music. Advanced mode exposes four tracks, a step sequencer, effects and MIDI over USB and TRS without discarding the music made in Easy mode. The firmware runs standalone without an app or account; installation uses a Python tool on a computer.

MC-1 is a four-part groovebox firmware for the M-VAVE FM-1 by dspaudio. Three melodic parts combine synthesis and recorded-instrument presets with a separate sixteen-lane drum part. Its sound engines include LA-inspired synthesis, a monophonic acid voice, and synthesized drum kits. Eight melodic voices are shared across the three parts, with six drum voices across the kit. Sixty-four patterns, sixteen-step sequencing, song arrangement, an arpeggiator, and recorded knob movements support composition and performance. Each part sends to two shared effects banks covering reverb, delay, chorus, and flanging. USB MIDI, TRS MIDI input, and stereo USB audio connect it to other gear. A browser emulator runs the shared sound engine and interface.

Mixtur is a subharmonic organ whose frequency dividers create undertone chords and vocal formants. Arc models a singing electrical arc, moving from a sine tone to a buzzing oscillator with noise, coupled voices and unstable textures. The Palme effect adds sympathetic strings and gong-like resonances, while In a Room repeatedly filters a recorded loop through a modeled acoustic space. Oracle turns geomantic figures into a four-lane step pattern that can play melodies or drums. Peal rearranges held notes using change-ringing methods, with humanized timing and live calls that alter the sequence. The OP-1’s colored encoders control each module, with animated screens showing the sound or pattern in motion. Choose the modules in the op1r web patcher to include them in a custom firmware build; these modules target the original OP-1.

Trumpagotchi turns the M-VAVE FM-1 into an unofficial Donald Trump virtual-pet parody. Keep the character’s food, mood and energy topped up by feeding him burgers, praising him, cleaning up and putting him to bed. Animated pixel art and edited voice clips accompany the care routine, while the lower white keys play a pentatonic instrument. When the pet is happy, he adds a bongo accompaniment. The first four upper black keys handle care actions, HOME shows status and controls, and PLAY/STOP pauses the pet and audio. Progress can be saved manually and autosaves when the audio is quiet; time spent powered off does not drain the pet’s needs. Firmware installation uses the project’s downloadable package and Python installer over USB MIDI.

LXRXXL puts the LXR-02 drum synthesizer's open-source sound engine on the Akai Force and first-generation MPCs as a native plugin. The whole LXR-02 panel sits on one page: display, pots, data encoder, faders, every button with its LED and the 16 step keys, playable from the touchscreen and the Force's pads. The six voices (three drums, snare, clap/cymbal and hi-hat) run the firmware's own oscillators, transient generator, filters, envelopes, LFOs, FM and FX unit with drive, ring modulation, compression and delay, plus its plate reverb, and kits use the LXR-02's own format. Around the engine sits a 64-pattern sequencer with per-step velocity, probability and parameter locks, shuffle, songs and recording. It runs on MPC OS 3.x and needs root SSH access to install.

SYNTH mode plays notes, DRUMS repeats held percussion keys, TUNE advances familiar melodies one note at a time, and TALK speaks letters in a synthesized toy voice. Bounded knobs shape tone, vibrato, space and note length, and change the character and scenery. Built on ChoralRoot and Felucca with SLOOP drum synthesis, it includes a WebAssembly browser emulator. This first public beta runs on the developer’s FM-1, with most verification performed in the emulator.

An arpeggiator and two step sequencers share a clock, with chords, independent pattern settings and a modulation lane for changing the sound per step. Save patches with their sequences on the device and follow incoming MIDI clock. The browser tool installs the firmware, converts and uploads wavetables from Serum, WaveEdit, Ableton and Surge formats, and manages patch names, ordering and backups. USB MIDI and stereo USB audio integrate the FM-1 with a computer.
